The benefits of a nutritious diet and consistent exercise regimen cannot be overstated; however, a healthy lifestyle does not always translate to a low body fat percentage, and exercise alone cannot eliminate localized fat deposits, which are often the result of genetics rather than lifestyle choices. Fortunately, liposuction surgery can safely and successfully eliminate stubborn fat pockets that are located between the skin and muscle, resulting in a leaner, firmer, and more toned physique.
Liposuction can be performed as a single surgery, or in conjunction with other aesthetic enhancement procedures (i.e. arm lift, thigh lift, tummy tuck). While lipoplasty procedures effectively eliminate persistent fat deposits, they are not designed to address cosmetic issues such as stretch marks or cellulite. Patients may have liposuction performed anywhere on the body where there is excess fat; however, the most common treatment areas are the: abdomen, thighs, cheeks, chin, chest, back, waist, knees, and flanks.
In order to achieve optimal liposuction results, this procedure should only be performed by a Board Certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Farbod Esmailian, whose private practice in Los Alamitos, CA serves patients in the greater Los Angeles area, including Newport Beach and Orange County. Dr. Esmailian has extensive experience performing body contouring procedures, and his surgical skill, professionalism, and attention to detail has made him the top choice for many patients seeking to sculpt, tone, and tighten their bodies.
LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
The type of anesthesia that will be utilized during your lipoplasty, as well as the duration of the procedure, will depend upon the amount and location of the fat needing removal, and whether or not other procedures are being performed at the same time. When performing the traditional liposuction technique known as Suction-Assisted Lipoplasty, Dr. Esmailian will infuse the treatment area with a tumescent solution (saline, epinephrine, and anesthetic), which serves to minimize bruising, bleeding, and discomfort. He will then make a series of small incisions, and will employ the use of a thin, hollow tube (cannula) to dislodge the fat before using a surgical vacuum to suction the fat out of the body. Alternative liposuction techniques include power-assisted liposuction and ultrasound-assisted liposuction, and after assessing your physical health and surgical goals, Dr. Esmailian will select the appropriate technique for your procedure.
At the conclusion of your lipoplasty procedure, Dr. Esmailian will wrap the treated area, and will provide you with a compression garment to wear for 4-6 weeks. Post-procedural bruising, swelling and fluid drainage can be expected for the first 7-10 days, which can be managed with prescription pain medication and antibiotics. Patients are typically able to return to work within a few days, and can slowly resume their normal activities when it is comfortable to do so. Once the fluid retention and swelling subsides, you will be able to see the newly enhanced contours of your body. Full physical activity, such as going to the gym or sports may be resumed usually at about 6 weeks time.
