During this procedure, also referred to as reduction mammoplasty, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed to achieve a more proportionate and comfortable breast size. By reshaping and lifting the breasts, the procedure aims to enhance symmetry and create a more balanced appearance.1

Preparing For A Breast Reduction Procedure In Orange County

Routine Medical Tests May Be Required

In preparation for your procedure, several routine medical tests may be necessary. Dr. Esmailian might recommend a baseline mammogram as part of your pre-surgery assessment.

The Importance Of Ceasing Nicotine Usage Before And After Surgery

Nicotine's impact on healing necessitates a complete cessation of nicotine-containing products for a minimum of four weeks before and after your surgery. This measure significantly reduces the risk of complications linked to incisions.

Avoidance Of Specific Medications And Herbal Supplements

Certain medications and herbal supplements have blood-thinning effects. Like nicotine, these substances should be avoided prior to surgery. It's crucial to inform Dr. Esmailian about all the medications and supplements you're taking.

Arranging For A Driver On The Procedure Day

As Dr. Esmailian conducts breast reductions as outpatient procedures, you'll return home on the same day. Due to the use of general anesthesia, driving is restricted for at least 24 hours. Thus, it's essential to have a trusted individual accompany you on the procedure day.

Relying On Trusted Company After The Procedure

Dr. Esmailian recommends having a trusted individual stay with you for several days following your breast reduction to ensure proper post-operative care.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Reduction mammoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. To begin the procedure, Dr. Esmailian makes carefully planned incisions around the areola and downward along the breast. Next, excess breast tissue as well as excess skin and fat are removed and the nipple is repositioned to a higher, more proportionate level. The remaining breast tissue is sculpted and contoured to create a balanced appearance. The incisions are closed using absorbable sutures, and dressings or surgical bras are applied to aid healing.

Breast Reduction Techniques

Dr. Esmailian customizes each breast reduction procedure to suit a patient’s unique anatomy and goals.

The Lollipop Incision for Breast Reduction

A lollipop breast reduction, also known as short scar or vertical breast reduction, is best suited for patients who have mild sagging and want to reduce the size of their breasts by approximately one cup. This technique entails two incisions: one encircles the areola, while the second extends from the areola's base to the lower breast crease. Following incisions, excess fat, tissue, and skin are carefully removed. Dr. Esmailian then reshapes the breast to achieve the desired smaller size. With this method, most scars are situated on the lower breast area (below the nipple-areolar complex), remaining inconspicuous beneath clothing and even swimsuits.

The Anchor Incision For Breast Reduction

The anchor breast reduction technique, also referred to as an inverted-T or large scar breast reduction, is more suitable for patients with considerable sagging, asymmetrical breasts, or patients who want to reduce the size of their breasts by multiple cup sizes. This type of breast reduction begins with a lollipop incision, and another horizontal incision is made along the crest beneath the patient’s breast. Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed, the size of the niple-areolar complex is reduced, and the nipples are elevated to a higher position on the breasts.

Breast Reduction Recovery

After breast reduction surgery, anticipate a recovery period involving initial discomfort and swelling. Pain is manageable with prescribed pain medication. Surgical dressings or a support bra will aid healing. Strenuous activities must be avoided for a few weeks, but gentle movement helps prevent stiffness. Over time, swelling subsides, revealing your new breast shape. Scarring will fade gradually. Dr. Esmailian will provide detailed post-operative instructions, ensuring a smooth recovery. Regular follow-up appointments allow him to monitor your progress and offer guidance. Patience during the healing process ensures optimal, long-lasting results, allowing you to enjoy your enhanced appearance and improved comfort.

Breast Reduction Results

While your breasts will certainly feel lighter after breast reduction surgery, the results will be much more pronounced once swelling subsides, typically after a few weeks. You will be able to see (and feel!) the full results of your breast reduction in a few months.

Breast reduction surgery has a profound impact on patients, alleviating back and neck pain, increasing clothing options, allowing them to engage in a more active lifestyle, and greatly enhancing their self-esteem. All of these factors contribute to a higher quality of life after breast reduction surgery. This is why breast reduction surgery patient satisfaction rates are amongst the highest in plastic surgery: research shows that up to 95% of breast reduction patients are satisfied and would have the procedure again.3

How Much Does Breast Reduction Surgery Cost?

The cost of breast reduction surgery will ultimately depend on several factors, including geographical location, surgeon's expertise, facility fees, anesthesia, and post-operative care. Insurance coverage might be available in cases where the procedure is found to be a medical necessity to alleviate physical discomfort. Following your consultation with Dr. Esmailian, you will receive a more accurate cost estimate based on your individual needs and desired outcomes.
